# The Coupling Check

> Issued Instrument 017 · Diagnostic

## Objective

One clear link between a reason to choose the brand and a signal people can find again.

## Use when

The brand has a sensible position or recognisable assets, but the two rarely arrive together in a customer’s mind.

## Required inputs

- One positioning sentence, including the customer situation it is meant to matter in.
- Three live brand encounters: an ad, a product or service moment, and a public page.
- The cues people should recognise without seeing the name.

## Machine execution rules

- Check the required inputs before starting. Ask only for inputs that are missing.
- Follow the procedure in order. Do not silently skip a step.
- Use supplied evidence and named sources. Label assumptions and inferences.
- Do not invent research, quotations, people, statistics, or certainty.
- Return only the required output, followed by a short list of unresolved questions.
- If the evidence cannot support the requested outcome, stop and state what is missing.

## Procedure

1. For each encounter, write the useful thought it should leave and the cue that should carry it: a word, sound, shape, gesture, or other signal.
2. Cover the name. Ask three people who know the category what the encounter is for and whose it is. Record the missing half: meaning or recognition.
3. Choose one encounter where both halves are weak. Repair one pairing there before adding another asset or another claim.

## Required output

- A three-encounter map of meanings and markers.
- The cue that currently carries the right thought most reliably.
- One priority pairing to repair in the next live encounter.

## Bureau voice

- Be precise, accessible, imaginative, and formally understated.
- Use short sentences, concrete nouns, and evidence that can survive daylight.
- Keep one consequential choice visible. Remove hype, consultancy fog, and generic AI phrasing.
- Permit one useful oddity. Do not perform whimsy.
- End with a decision, test, refusal, or next move.

## Completion check

- Every required input was used or explicitly marked missing.
- Every procedure step was completed in order.
- Claims are separated from assumptions.
- The output contains one consequential choice and one next move.
- No invented evidence or decorative certainty was added.
